Evaluation and Comparison of MODIS C6 and C6.1 Deep Blue Aerosol Products in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas of Northwestern China

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Deep Blue (DB) algorithm was developed for aerosol retrieval on bright surfaces. Although the global validation accuracy of DB product is satisfactory, there are still some regions found to have very low accuracy. To this end, has updated surface database in latest version Collection 6.1 (C6.1) algorithm. Some studies shown that optical depth (AOD) old 6 (C6) been seriously underestimated Northwestern China. However, status new C6.1 region unknown. This study aims comprehensively evaluate performance MODIS AOD with high quality (Quality Flag = 2 or 3) selected validate against 23 sites from China Aerosol Remote Sensing Network (CARSNET) and Robotic (AERONET) during period 2002–2014. By overall analysis, results indicate both C6 show significant underestimation a large fraction more than 54% collocations falling below Expected Error (EE ±(0.05 + 20% AODground)) envelope negative Mean Bias (MB) less ?0.14. Furthermore, products failed achieve reasonable improvements Besides, slightly fewer due pixels systematic biases removed reflectance database.
